I have always liked CORTLAND LINES…
They just work.
The line competes in specifications with allot of lines, but my history and experience with Cortland has been superior. So went my decession to purchase Cortland lines.
what I like about the type six lines is that these lines sink quickly in fast powerful rivers like New Zealand Tongariro River.
My catch rate is much better than when I am using a nymphing floating line so much so on this river I am hooked on a type 6 full sinking line. getting to the bottom is critical to getting to the Rainbow trout on the Tongariro River.
Not happy sinking rate is OK. But when stripping line a lot of coils which cause tangles. line is very stiff and will not light flat when stripping.
Don’t be misled by the fact that 444 full sinking type 6 is an old fly line that has been manufactured for a long time. This fly line is still one of the best sinking lines on the market. The fly line is very easy to handle and the stability is excellent. The classification is a bit low. Therefore, an # 8 fly line to a # 7 rod is recommended. If you want an excellent sinking fly line for long distance, here is a hint. Cut the fly line so you get a 40 feet belly and replace the old running line with a monofilament nylon running line. With this modification, it is possible to reach a distance of 120 feet quite easily.
First let me say I really like Cortland lines. I own many and am about to buy another. I've used them for over 40 years. I've tried other brands but always come back to Cortland. This particular line I don't like. I tried it out and I was not pleased. It was almost no taper and the first 30 feet weighted 122 grains not 140 grains as it should for a 5 weight. I emailed Cortland and Scott McCann responded quickly giving me a return number and stating they would check it out and get back to me about a replacement. Scott did not get back to me but simple sent me another of the same line. Its the same as the first, won't cast on a true 5 weight rod and kind of works on a 4 weight rod but it's a struggle. It does sink. For me its regulated to a storage drawer. Going up 1 or 2 line weights might work but I'll never know. I can not recommend this line in 5 weight for a 5 weight rod.
