Line & Leader Setup Guide
Every system begins at the connection point. Whether fly or conventional, leaders and line condition determine presentation, strength, and control. Select your system below to review recommended setups and replacement guidance.
Leader & Tippet System
A fly leader transfers energy from line to fly, allowing controlled turnover and natural presentation. Tippet determines diameter, strength, and visibility at the fly.
• Visible nicks or abrasion
• Excessive memory
• UV damage
• Compromised knot strength
Inspect before every outing. Replace at the first sign of wear.
| Application | Leader | Tippet | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry Fly | 9-15 ft Nylon Tapered Leader | 3X–8X Nylon or Fluorocarbon Tippet | Delicate turnover |
| Nymphing | Euro Nymph Leader Material or Tapered Euro Nymph Leader | 4X–6X Fluorocarbon Tippet | Reduced visibility |
| Streamers | Fluorocarbon XTR or Streamer Nylon Tapered Leaders | Mono, Fluorocarbon XTR Leader Material or 0X-3X Tippet | Strength under load |
| All Purpose | 9 ft Nylon Tapered Leader | 0X-6X Nylon Or Fluorocarbon Tippet | Maintains flexibility |
Main Line & Leader System
Leader material connects main line to lure, adding abrasion resistance and reducing visibility in clear water. Proper selection improves strength and control under load.
• Frayed or rough leader surface
• Faded or worn line
• Excessive coil memory
• Reduced knot integrity
Inspect routinely. Replace when wear becomes visible.
| Application | Main Line | Leader | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshwater Bass | Master Braid | Fluorocarbon | Sensitivity + stealth |
| Clear Water | Master braid | Fluorocarbon | Reduced visibility |
| Heavy Cover | Silent Flip | Heavy fluorocarbon | Abrasion resistance |
| Inshore | Master Braid | Fluorocarbon | Strength and durability |
| Offshore | C12, C16 or Master Braid | Fluorocarbon | Strength and durability |
